why do you load the .gds file instead of the .mag file? I think the .mag file allows you to set the port ordering while importing a gds file has no such guarantee?

If you write GDS from magic, then it writes the ports in order, so if you read back that GDS the ports will still be in order. No such guarantee for GDS written by other tools.
