You can contact gate at both sides (this is often done for RF transistors) or you can split transistor into two, one per side. You can not contact gate in the middle of the S/D diffusion.

@manili these are just shapes i drew in xschem, so just a qualitative sketch. Originally i wanted xschem to be a general purpose drawing tool for EDA, so both layout and schematics. Over time i concentrated my efforts on schematics only.

@Stefan Schippers: For sky130, the better layout is to contact up immediately from both drain and source through local interconnect to metal1; in the layout you drew, what you called "metal1" above is "local interconnect" in sky130. For most processes, what you drew would be the ideal layout, but not sky130.
