@User: Yes; the main restriction is that the management SoC must boot first and configure the user space. I have worked hard to make sure that the architecture prevents people from bricking their own projects. The management SoC can be used to power up the user space and monitor the power supplies and pull it out of reset; that sort of thing. Within your user space, to the extent that you have room for it, you can implement your own OpenRAM block or synthesized memory, and you can have your own flash SPI controller and connect to a 2nd SPI flash chip on the development board to drive your own user project (assuming your user project is some digital processor that can manage memory and external SPI flash itself).
