I think you already figured this out, but edit the cell and do "flatten <name>" which will dump the flattened contents into a new cell named <name>. You would then have to manually replace the original cell with the new cell in the parent layout. There are a few options to "flatten" if you want to avoid dumping labels into the flattened cell, for example.
