@User I was mistaken, as a gds is never loaded entirely. I checked some old designs and yes, i found also 5GB gds streamouts that were handled on old SunOS machines with far less resident RAM. I thought that was the size of a single layout cell. That said, it is true that virtual memory is infinite and applications shouldn't care, however when a system starts eavily paging (RSS >> Total RAM) it is dead to the point that you can'r even fork a kill process, and the only option is waiting forever untill a kernel OOP killer kicks in or hitting the power button for ~5 seconds.
