Actually where the routine is slowing down is where it attempts symmetry breaking by property matching. This is generally intended for primitive device comparison (transistors, resistors, ...). So the trivial fix that comes to my mind for standard cell designs is to note when cells do not have properties so that it can skip that step altogether.
