Back in the 1980s/1990s anyone doing chip designs would use plotters to make huge drawings to hang on the walls. Before that the masks themselves started out as huge drawings hand cut from rubylith.

Well, this was done well into the 2000s-2010. We only really stopped because we could not find drivers for the older inkjet plotters that could work in current computers anymore. And we could not justify the price tag of the new ones.
