@User Currently xschem supports symbol embedding, that means a schematic can embed all instantiated components. This way a schematic containing primitive symbols like resistors, transistors capacitors, etc can be made self consistent. However embedding a full hierarchy of schematics and symbols into a single file is not yet doable. There are several different approaches, for example adding the ability to read a tar/zip file or any other archive format, If there is interest i can work on this. Reading is simple, writing is a little bit more complicated (update the embedded archive?).
