it looks like there are a couple of jobs the external tools need to do...schematic capture and layout generation? something like kicad could probably do the schematic capture pretty easily, it's got python scripting, node attribute support for netlists, etc. I'm only just starting to look at magic but it seems to be the go-to right now for the layout generation
